The Nikon NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II is a professional S-Line telephoto zoom lens designed for Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras. Covering the versatile 70-200mm focal range with a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture, it is built for sports, wildlife, events, weddings, portraits and professional video production. This second-generation design combines a lightweight internal-zoom construction with Nikon's Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor autofocus system, advanced Vibration Reduction, premium S-Line optics and extensive professional controls for fast, precise shooting in demanding environments.

- 18-element, 16-group optical construction incorporates ED, Super ED, aspherical ED, aspherical, fluorite and SR lens elements.
- Meso Amorphous Coat and ARNEO Coat help suppress ghosting and flare in challenging lighting.
- Fluorine-coated front element helps repel dust, moisture, grease and fingerprints.
- Minimum focusing distance starts at just 0.38 m at 70mm and 85mm.
- Maximum reproduction ratio of 0.3x at 70mm provides useful close-up capability.
- Rounded 11-blade diaphragm supports smooth, natural-looking background blur.
- 77 mm front filter thread supports compatible photographic filters.
- Removable tripod collar provides an Arca-Swiss-compatible mounting interface for supported screw-type clamps.
- Compatible with Nikon Z TELECONVERTER TC-1.4x and TC-2.0x.
Professional 70-200mm f/2.8 Versatility
The 70-200mm focal range is well suited to a broad selection of professional photography applications. At 70mm, photographers can work comfortably with environmental portraits, events and closer action, while the 200mm telephoto end provides additional reach for sports, wildlife, ceremonies and distant subjects.
The maximum aperture remains at f/2.8 throughout the zoom range, providing consistent exposure behaviour while zooming and giving photographers greater control over depth of field and low-light shooting.

Constant f/2.8 Maximum Aperture
The constant f/2.8 aperture provides strong light-gathering capability across the complete 70-200mm zoom range. This allows faster shutter speeds to be used when photographing action and provides additional flexibility when working in indoor venues, at events or during lower-light shooting conditions.
The wide aperture also supports shallow depth of field, helping isolate subjects against softly rendered backgrounds for portraits, sports and detail photography.
Internal Zoom Mechanism
The NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II uses an internal zoom design, meaning its physical length does not change as the focal length is adjusted. This helps maintain more consistent balance when shooting handheld, using a monopod or working with a compatible camera gimbal.
The internal construction also reduces the amount of external movement during zooming and contributes to the lens's dust- and drip-resistant design.
Silky Swift VCM Autofocus
Nikon's Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor technology drives the lens's Multi-Focus autofocus system. The system is designed to provide high-speed, highly accurate and extremely quiet focusing with minimal vibration.
Nikon states that autofocus performance can be approximately 3.5 times faster than the original NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S under its specified test conditions when used with compatible cameras equipped with the EXPEED 7 image-processing engine.
Up to 6.0 Stops of Vibration Reduction
Built-in lens-shift Vibration Reduction helps compensate for camera shake during handheld photography and video recording. Nikon specifies up to 5.5 stops of compensation from the lens itself.
When the lens is used with a compatible Nikon camera supporting Synchro VR, stabilisation performance can reach up to 6.0 stops under Nikon's CIPA 2024 test conditions. Actual stabilisation performance varies according to camera model, focal length and shooting conditions.
Premium S-Line Optical Construction
The lens uses 18 optical elements arranged in 16 groups. The design incorporates one ED glass element, one Super ED element, one aspherical ED element, two aspherical elements, one fluorite element and one Short-Wavelength Refractive element.
These specialised optical components work together to control chromatic aberration, colour fringing and other optical imperfections while maintaining high resolution and contrast across the image frame.

Meso Amorphous and ARNEO Coatings
Nikon's Meso Amorphous Coat provides advanced anti-reflection performance to suppress ghosting and flare caused by light entering the lens from different directions. ARNEO Coat provides additional control over vertically incident light.
Together, these coatings help maintain clarity, contrast and colour reproduction when photographing backlit scenes, bright stadium lighting, stage lighting and other difficult lighting conditions.
Improved Close-Focusing Performance
The lens can focus as close as 0.38 m at the 70mm and 85mm positions, 0.5 m at 105mm, 0.6 m at 135mm and 0.8 m at 200mm, measured from the camera's focal plane.
A maximum reproduction ratio of 0.3x at 70mm provides useful close-up capability for details, products, flowers and other smaller subjects without changing to a dedicated macro lens.
Rounded 11-Blade Diaphragm
An 11-blade rounded diaphragm helps produce smooth and rounded out-of-focus highlights. Combined with the constant f/2.8 aperture and longer focal lengths, this allows photographers to create strong subject separation with soft background bokeh.
Designed for Professional Video
The internal zoom construction, quiet autofocus system and optical design with reduced focus breathing make the lens well suited to hybrid stills and video production. Its consistent physical length also helps maintain camera balance when the lens is used on a compatible gimbal.
A customisable control ring includes a click/de-click switch, allowing photographers to use tactile adjustments for stills or smoother, quieter control during video recording.
Customisable Professional Controls
The lens provides dedicated controls for fast operation in demanding shooting environments. Customisable L-Fn and L-Fn2 buttons allow commonly used camera functions to be accessed directly from the lens in both horizontal and vertical shooting orientations.
A focus-limit switch can restrict the autofocus range when required, helping the camera concentrate on subjects within the expected shooting distance.
Removable Arca-Swiss-Compatible Tripod Collar
The removable tripod collar makes it easier to balance the lens and camera when using a tripod or monopod. Nikon designed the collar with an Arca-Swiss-compatible mounting profile, reducing the need for a separate quick-release plate when used with compatible screw-type Arca-Swiss clamps.
Nikon specifically recommends screw-type Arca-Swiss clamps for this lens. Lever-type clamps may not provide sufficient holding strength and are therefore not recommended.
Protective Cover for Handheld Shooting
When the tripod collar is removed, the supplied protective cover can be fitted over the tripod-collar mounting area. This provides a smoother lens-barrel profile for more comfortable handheld operation while protecting the exposed collar mount.
HB-119 Lens Hood with Filter Access
The supplied HB-119 lens hood helps reduce stray light and provides additional physical protection for the front of the lens. A dedicated filter-adjustment window allows compatible circular polarising and variable ND filters to be rotated without removing the hood.
77 mm Filter Thread
The front of the lens accepts standard 77 mm screw-in photographic filters. Compatible circular polarising, neutral-density and protective filters can therefore be fitted according to the photographer's requirements.
Teleconverter Compatibility
The NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II is compatible with Nikon's Z TELECONVERTER TC-1.4x and TC-2.0x. The 1.4x teleconverter extends the effective focal range to approximately 98-280mm, while the 2.0x teleconverter provides approximately 140-400mm of reach.
Teleconverters are optional accessories and can affect maximum aperture and autofocus performance depending on the camera, subject and shooting conditions.
Professional Dust- and Drip-Resistant Design
The lens uses extensive sealing around moving parts and other potential entry points to help protect against dust and moisture during professional outdoor use. A fluorine coating on the front optical element also helps repel water droplets, dust, grease and fingerprints and makes the surface easier to clean.
Nikon notes that complete resistance to dust and water cannot be guaranteed in every situation or under all operating conditions.
